Pune to Mumbai in 3 Hours! MSRTC Launches Shivneri Buses on Atal Setu |
Exciting news for frequent travelers between Mumbai and Pune! The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has launched a pilot program to operate its premium Shivneri buses on the newly inaugurated Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). This initiative promises to significantly reduce travel time between the two cities, offering a faster and more convenient travel experience.
What's the change?
Previously, Shivneri buses plied between Mumbai and Pune via the traditional route, taking around four hours and catering to passengers along the way.
Now, select Shivneri buses will have the option to bypass traffic by utilizing the Atal Setu, a sea bridge that significantly reduces travel distance.
The traditional route:
The traditional route between Mumbai and Pune is approximately 150 kilometers long and takes around four hours to complete. It passes through several towns and cities, including Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and Khopoli. This route can be congested, especially during peak hours, which can lead to delays.
The Atal Setu route:
The Atal Setu route is a shorter alternative that bypasses most of the traffic on the traditional route. It is approximately 90 kilometers long and is expected to reduce travel time by up to 25%, or about an hour. The route starts from Shivaji Nagar in Mumbai, takes the MTHL bridge across the Thane creek, and then joins the Mumbai-Pune Expressway near Navi Mumbai.
Benefits for passengers:
- Reduced travel time: The Atal Setu route is expected to cut down travel time by up to 25%, potentially saving passengers a precious hour on their journey.
- No change in fares: Despite the premium service on the Atal Setu route, MSRTC has assured that there will be no increase in fares for Shivneri buses traveling between Mumbai and Pune.
Current status and future plans:
The initiative is currently in its pilot phase, with two Shivneri buses operating daily between Pune and Mumbai via the Atal Setu. Based on the success of this pilot program, MSRTC may consider expanding the service to include more buses and potentially make it a permanent option.

Here are some additional points to consider:
It's important to note that not all Shivneri buses will be using the Atal Setu route. Passengers should check the specific route information while booking their tickets.
final decision on expanding the service will depend on various factors, including passenger feedback and operational feasibility.
We're excited to see how this initiative unfolds and how it impacts travel between Mumbai and Pune. Stay tuned for further updates!
